Just for kicks and giggles, I decided to write this news article to explain where a character went when the player was too sick to make the game. This ultimately became the "official" story about what happened, which made me smile. I hope you enjoy it!
Gatherhold – An adventuring sorcerer/priest fell victim to his own magic in the busy Bel'il Market. Over a dozen bystanders were injured in the disturbance, the cause of which is yet unknown, but authorities have identified a possible connection: a wasting disease from the Dark-Gray Mist.
Maerin, one member of a small group of adventurers recently arrived from the Mournlands, felt the effects of a spell gone wrong earlier today. According to witnesses, the caster appeared to be fine if somewhat flustered as a small group of children pestered him to, as one bystander put it, “Just cast something!” While accessing his arcane abilities to appease their curiosity and send the children on their way, the area erupted in a concussive blast of flame that left fifteen bystanders injured and the caster unconscious in the street. According to authorities on the scene, the effect was a minor glammer that should have been harmless.
The reason for the disturbance is uncertain, but authorities suspect it is somehow connected with his recent adventures. “We are of course concerned about his wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of all of those his actions may have injured,” said Tormalin, a local magistrate. “He will remain in custody until he is conscious and able to answer questions.”
The remaining members of Maerin's adventuring group were located and questioned without incident. All were released pending the outcome of the investigation.
