Quandry of Content

I have a problem. I don’t know how to focus my blog to some productive end, or even if such a productive end is worthwhile. As is obvious from my posts to date, I’m far from the most consistent poster, to the point where I’d imagine most readers quickly give up on me. Even when I manage to post regularly, I usually post from the incredibly wide array of topics that infect my festering brain. Role-playing games, psychology, economics, religion, intellectual property, freedom, security, politics, personal finance, education, programming, computers/technology, or just plain personal stuff.

A part of me would like to blog more often - enough so that I’ve got a few dozen “posts-in-progress” and started researching and refining my writing technique. I also feel as though I should split my topics to multiple different blogs, so that my readership (all one of you) can better filter the content they are interested in. Of course, if I do that, I’m likely to dilute the posting rate of each separate blog even further.

I’ll also admit with being enamored with the concept of being a professional blogger, especially now that two of my favorite bloggers are leaving their day jobs. Unfortunately, I feel a strong urge to avoid any sort of site advertising, even something relatively unobtrusive like Google AdWords. Partly it’s my minimalist design tendencies striving to avoid the clutter, and partly it’s a general belief that suckering web-readers into clicking on ads is somehow inherently dishonest. The rationalization that “everyone does it” is little comfort in quelling these demons, as I strongly believe in taking the ethical high road whenever possible, and merely bowing to societal pressure and joining the herd is counterproductive to my message. Though, I must admit, if I don’t use the advertising as an incentive to write, I may eschew the writing and thus the message is still lost.

Of course, all of these random mental exercise does little if I don’t increase the value of my content by increasing the post rate while maintaining or increasing the quality of my posts.
