Where to begin? I’ve been running myself ragged with all the things I’m trying to do, yet I never really seem to accomplish that much.
Trib has decided to use my leisure time and obsession with web-design to implement a new reporting system to keep track of our network status, and possibly to re-implement the help-desk software we use to track incoming calls and the database we use to store customer info. I’m not sure, but I really think I may have some predilection towards UI design, since I really seem to be good at criticizing bad UI design. Most likely it’s a throwback to my days at APM, when they had me read a bunch of books on usability and UI design and then had me tear apart whatever clunky interfaces the programmers came up with. In any case, we’ll see how I do in designing a usable system on my own.
Concomitant with my work project, I’ve been madly teaching myself multiple scripting and web-development languages, in hopes that the general knowledge will a) be useful in my project, and b) make me more marketable in the real world. I’ve thrown together some really nifty PHP scripts, that I will hopefully put up in my tech section, but I can’t guarantee anything soon.
I’ve also decided to take the plunge and start the massive conversion to Linux of my own personal network. I’ve made installs in the past, but I tended not to have the time or inclination to actually learn to use Linux, meaning its stay on my hard drives was brief at best. Now that I have actual free time, and a definite purpose to put towards the OS, I figure that it will become more ingrained. In any case, I’m currently so excited that I’m ready to convert 4 of my 5 computers right now.
On the social front, I managed to have a massive fight with my roommate to the point where we were ready to find alternate living arrangements. Then we made up, and are more or less content with the status quo. I actually managed to get out and see real people on Memorial Day, and I’ve been spending a fair bit of my spare spare-time helping my parents with various landscaping/gardening and computer tasks.
I’d rant and rave about something, but I’ve been so busy that I haven’t really found the time to get annoyed with anything lately. So you’ll just have to wait until I get properly perturbed.
