Off the network

So this weekend was interesting. It started Friday night with being unable to access the internet. Mark decided that it was my fault for some reason (he seems to think that a lot, sometimes) and wanted me to fix it. I did some preliminary poking around, and decided that the external connection wasn’t working for some reason. I figured that AT&T was having issues, and decided to give it an hour or so. When it wasn’t working after two full hours, Mark finally got frustrated and called the support number. Turns out they didn’t bother charging his credit card the last month or two, and turned off the service. Best of all, they won’t turn it back on until May 4.

I’ve been struggling to live in my (semi)unconnected world, and hating nearly every minute of it. You never understand how intrinsic something is to your life until it is removed, and boy did I realize it. So now I’m trying to decide if I want to give up my cellphone and get a land line. My battery life has gotten so dismal I don’t even bother taking the phone with me anymore, and I get so few calls it really doesn’t matter anyway. Literally, I get about one or two calls a week from my parents, one or two calls from other people I know, and about ten wrong numbers.

Spent a lot of time watching movies: Big Trouble (funny flick), Joe Somebody (okay), and Bad Company (bleh). I think Bad Company’s only real redeeming value was getting to hear Sir Anthony Hopkins say “Get in the car, bitch”. If ever there was a more incongruous image, I’ve never seen it.

My parents also got back on Sunday, and we placed the order for the computer parts. I’m really excited about it, and part of me wants to start ripping into my network to start getting ready for the new additions (I have a lot of hardware that needs reallocating), but the lack of internet has me a wee bit nervous. It’s one of those things you never think about, but having all of the potential drivers for every piece of hardware and every operating system is kinda hard to live without.
